Photophobia & Free Siddha Energy Remedies

Photophobia (प्रकाश की असहनीयता) is a symptom of abnormal intolerance to the visual perception of light. As a medical symptom, photophobia is not a morbid fear or phobia, but an experience of discomfort or pain to the eyes due to light exposure or by the presence of actual physical sensitivity of the eyes, though the term is sometimes additionally applied to an abnormal or irrational fear of light such as heliophobia. Siddha Spirituality of Swami Hardas Life System brings out in-depth about photophobia, symptoms, causes, risk factors, prevention, and treatment. Photophobia Meaning (प्रकाश की असहनीयता का अर्थ)

The term photophobia comes from the Greek φῶς (phōs), meaning “light”, and φόβος (phóbos), meaning “fear”. Photophobia is a common symptom of visual snow.

Photophobia: Why are Your Eyes Sensitive to Light?

Photophobia Symptoms (प्रकाश की असहनीयता के लक्षण)

Sensitivity to light is the inability to tolerate light, medically known as photophobia. In someone who is light sensitive, any type of light source e.g. sunlight, fluorescent light, incandescent light can cause discomfort. Photophobia typically causes a need to squint or close the eyes, and headache, nausea, or other symptoms may be associated with photophobia.

Symptoms may be worse with bright light. People with light-colored eyes are more likely to have a sensitivity to bright light than those with darker-pigmented eyes. Light sensitivity is caused by a number of conditions that affect the eye such as iritis, uveitis, and keratitis, as well as conditions that affect the entire body. Migraine headache is a common cause of photophobia, with a majority of migraine sufferers reporting sensitivity to light.

Photophobia Causes (प्रकाश की असहनीयता के कारण)

Patients may develop photophobia as a result of several different medical conditions, related to the eye, the nervous system, genetic, or other causes. Photophobia may manifest itself in an increased response to light starting at any step in the visual system, such as:

  • Too much light entering the eye. Too much light can enter the eye if it is damaged, such as with corneal abrasion and retinal damage, or if its pupil(s) is unable to normally constrict
  • Due to albinism, the lack of pigment in the colored part of the eyes (irises) makes them somewhat translucent
  • Overstimulation of the photoreceptors in the retina
  • Excessive electric impulses to the optic nerve
  • Excessive response in the central nervous system
  • Elevated trigeminal nerve tone. Elevated trigeminal tone causes elevated substance P which causes hypersensitivity

Common causes of photophobia include migraine headaches, TMJ, cataracts, Sjögren syndrome, Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI), or severe ophthalmologic diseases such as uveitis or corneal abrasion. A more extensive list follows:

Eye-related causes (नेत्र संबंधी कारण)

Causes of photophobia relating directly to the eye itself include:

  • Achromatopsia
  • Aniridia
  • Anticholinergic drugs may cause photophobia by paralyzing the iris sphincter muscle
  • Aphakia
  • Blepharitis
  • Buphthalmos
  • Cataracts
  • Coloboma
  • Cone dystrophy
  • Congenital abnormalities of the eye
  • Viral conjunctivitis
  • Corneal abrasion
  • Corneal ulcer
  • Disruption of the corneal epithelium, such as that caused by a corneal foreign body or keratitis
  • Ectopia lentis
  • Endophthalmitis
  • Eye trauma caused by disease, injury, or infection
  • Hydrophthalmos, or congenital glaucoma
  • Iritis
  • Isotretinoin has been associated with photophobia
  • Optic neuritis
  • Pigment dispersion syndrome
  • Pupillary dilation
  • Retinal detachment
  • Scarring of the cornea or sclera
  • Uveitis

Nervous-system-related causes (तंत्रिका-तंत्र-संबंधी कारण)

Neurological causes for photophobia include:

  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Chiari malformation
  • Dyslexia
  • Encephalitis including Myalgic encephalomyelitis
  • Meningitis
  • The trigeminal disturbance causes central sensitization
  • Progressive supranuclear palsy, where photophobia can sometimes precede the clinical diagnosis by years
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Tumor of the posterior cranial fossa

Other causes of Photophobia (प्रकाश की असहनीयता के अन्य कारण)

  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Albinism
  • Ariboflavinosis
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Chemotherapy
  • Chikungunya
  • Cystinosis
  • Drug withdrawal
  • Ehlers–Danlos syndrome
  • Infectious mononucleosis

Photophobia Prevention (प्रकाश की असहनीयता की रोकथाम)

Artificial lighting (कृत्रिम प्रकाश व्यवस्था)

People with photophobia may feel eye pain from even moderate levels of artificial light and avert their eyes from artificial light sources. Ambient levels of artificial light may also be intolerable to persons who have photophobia such that they dim or remove the light source, or go into a dimmer lit room, such a one lit by the refraction of light from outside the room.

Alternatively, they may wear dark sunglasses, sunglasses designed to filter peripheral light, and/or wide-brimmed sun hat or baseball caps. Some types of photophobia may be helped with the use of precision tinted lenses which block the green-to-blue end of the light spectrum without blurring or impeding vision.

Other strategies for relieving photophobia include the use of tinted contact lenses and/or the use of prescription eye drops that constrict the pupil, thus reducing the amount of light entering the eye. Such strategies may be limited by the amount of light needed for proper vision under given conditions, however.

Dilating drops may also help relieve eye pain from muscle spasms or seizures triggered by lighting/migraine, allowing a person to “ride out the migraine” in a dark or dim room.

Alternative lighting (वैकल्पिक प्रकाश व्यवस्था)

Photophobia may preclude or limit a person from working in places where offensive lighting is virtually ubiquitous e.g., big box stores, airports, libraries, hospitals, warehouses, offices, workshops, classrooms, supermarkets, and storage spaces unless the person is able to obtain a reasonable accommodation. Some people with photophobia may be better able to work at night or be more easily accommodated in the workplace at night. Outdoor night lighting may be equally offensive for persons with photophobia, however, given the wide variety of bright lighting used for illuminating residential, commercial, and industrial areas, such as LED lamps.

Photophobia Risk factors (प्रकाश की असहनीयता के जोखिम कारक)

Risk factors for Photophobia are factors that do not seem to be a direct cause of the disease but seem to be associated in some way. Having a risk factor for Photophobia makes the chances of getting a condition higher but does not always lead to Photophobia. Also, the absence of any risk factors or having a protective factor does not necessarily guard you against getting Photophobia.

Lifestyle Inactivity, stress, diet, aging
Behaviour Sex, smoking, alcohol, drugs
Fatal Four Obesity, cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension
Diseases HIV, heart, cancer, autoimmune, immunocompromise
Infection Animals, birds, insects, water, travel
Exposure Environment, occupation, sunlight, radiation, chemicals
Medications Medications, contraceptives, steroids
Women Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause

Photophobia Treatment (प्रकाश की असहनीयता का उपचार)

The best treatment for light sensitivity is to address the underlying cause, whether it be an eye, nervous system, or other cause. Notwithstanding recent progress in understanding the light sensitivity of the eye, much more research is needed to better understand and treat photophobia, especially where it relates to migraine or other nervous system disorders. Genetic research into photophobia-related disorders is also needed. If the triggering factor or underlying cause can be identified and treated, photophobia may disappear.
