Influenza, commonly known as “flu“, is an infectious disease caused by influenza viruses. Symptoms range from mild to severe and often include fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pain, headache, coughing, and fatigue. These symptoms begin from one to four days after exposure to the virus (typically two days) and last for about 2–8 days. Diarrhea and vomiting can occur, particularly in children. Influenza may progress to pneumonia, which can be caused by the virus or by a subsequent bacterial infection. Other complications of infection include acute respiratory distress syndrome, meningitis, encephalitis, and worsening of pre-existing health problems such as asthma and cardiovascular disease. Having mild to severe symptoms, the Siddha Spirituality of Swami Hardas Life System can be of great help in preventing and controlling influenza.
What is Influenza?
Influenza, also called flu or grippe, is an acute viral infection of the upper or lower respiratory tract that is marked by fever, chills, and a generalized feeling of weakness and pain in the muscles, together with varying degrees of soreness in the head and abdomen.
Types of Influenza virus
There are four types of influenza virus, termed influenza viruses A, B, C, and D. Aquatic birds are the primary source of the Influenza A virus (IAV), which is also widespread in various mammals, including humans and pigs. Influenza B virus (IBV) and Influenza C virus (ICV) primarily infect humans, and Influenza D virus (IDV) is found in cattle and pigs.
There are 3–5 million severe cases annually, with up to 650,000 respiratory-related deaths globally each year. Deaths most commonly occur in high-risk groups, including young children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions. In temperate regions of the world, the number of influenza cases peaks during winter, whereas in the tropics influenza can occur year-round.
Influenza Symptoms
The time between exposure to the virus and the development of symptoms, called the incubation period, is 1–4 days, most commonly 1–2 days. Many infections, however, are asymptomatic. The onset of symptoms is sudden, and initial symptoms are predominately non-specific, including:
- Fever,
- Chills,
- A headache,
- Muscle weakness, pain or aching,
- A feeling of discomfort,
- Loss of appetite,
- Lack of energy/fatigue, and
- Confusion.
Respiratory symptoms
These symptoms are usually accompanied by respiratory symptoms such as a dry cough, sore or dry throat, hoarse voice, and a stuffy or runny nose. Coughing is the most common symptom.
Gastrointestinal symptoms
Gastrointestinal symptoms may also occur, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastroenteritis, especially in children. The standard influenza symptoms typically last for 2–8 days.
A 2021 study suggests influenza can cause long-lasting symptoms in a similar way to long COVID.
Symptomatic infection
Symptomatic infections are usually mild and limited to the upper respiratory tract, but progression to pneumonia is relatively common.
Primary pneumonia
Primary pneumonia is characterized by rapid progression of fever, cough, labored breathing, and low oxygen levels that cause bluish skin. It is especially common among those who have an underlying cardiovascular disease such as rheumatic heart disease.
Secondary pneumonia
Secondary pneumonia typically has a period of improvement in symptoms for 1–3 weeks followed by recurrent fever, sputum production, and fluid buildup in the lungs, but can also occur just a few days after influenza symptoms appear.
About a third of primary pneumonia cases are followed by secondary pneumonia, which is most frequently caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus.
Influenza Mechanism
Transmission of Influenza
People who are infected can transmit influenza viruses through breathing, talking, coughing, and sneezing, which spread respiratory droplets and aerosols that contain virus particles into the air. A person susceptible to infection can then contract influenza by coming into contact with these particles. Respiratory droplets are relatively large and travel less than two meters before falling onto nearby surfaces.
Transmission through contact
Transmission through contact with a person, bodily fluids, or intermediate objects (fomites) can also occur, such as through contaminated hands and surfaces since influenza viruses can survive for hours on non-porous surfaces.
Influenza Prevention
Vaccination for Influenza
Annual vaccination is the primary and most effective way to prevent influenza and influenza-associated complications, especially for high-risk groups. Vaccines against the flu are trivalent or quadrivalent, providing protection against an H1N1 strain, an H3N2 strain, and one or two IBV strains corresponding to the two IBV lineages.
Types of vaccines
Two types of vaccines are in use: Inactivated vaccines that contain “killed” (i.e. inactivated) viruses and Live attenuated influenza vaccines (LAIVs) that contain weakened viruses.
There are three types of inactivated vaccines: whole virus, split virus, in which the virus is disrupted by a detergent, and subunit, which only contains the viral antigens HA and NA. Most flu vaccines are inactivated and administered via intramuscular injection. LAIVs are sprayed into the nasal cavity.
Vaccines for school-age children
Vaccination of school-age children has been shown to provide indirect protection for other age groups.
In general, influenza vaccines are only effective if there is an antigenic match between vaccine strains and circulating strains.
Influenza can be prevented or reduced in severity by post-exposure prophylaxis with the antiviral drugs oseltamivir, which can be taken orally by those at least three months old, and zanamivir, which can be inhaled by those above seven years of age. Chemoprophylaxis is most useful for individuals at high risk of developing complications.
Influenza infection control
Hand hygiene is important in reducing the spread of influenza. This includes frequent handwashing with soap and water, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and not touching one’s eyes, nose, and mouth with one’s hands. Covering one’s nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing is important.
Other methods
There is uncertainty about the use of masks since research thus far has not shown a significant reduction in seasonal influenza with mask usage.
Social distancing
Social distancing measures such as school closures, avoiding contact with infected people via isolation or quarantine, and limiting mass gatherings may reduce transmission, but these measures are often expensive, unpopular, and difficult to implement.
Commonly recommended methods
Consequently, the commonly recommended methods of infection control are respiratory etiquette, hand hygiene, and mask-wearing, which are inexpensive and easy to perform. Pharmaceutical measures are effective but may not be available in the early stages of an outbreak.
Negative pressure rooms
In health care settings, infected individuals may be cohorted or assigned to individual rooms. Protective clothing such as masks, gloves, and gowns is recommended when coming into contact with infected individuals if there is a risk of exposure to infected bodily fluids.
Keeping patients in negative pressure rooms and avoiding aerosol-producing activities may help, but special air handling and ventilation systems are not considered necessary to prevent the spread of influenza in the air.
Prevention from animals
Since influenza viruses circulate in animals such as birds and pigs, prevention of transmission from these animals is important.
Placing poultry houses and piggeries on high ground away from high-density farms, backyard farms, live poultry markets, and bodies of water help to minimize contact with wild birds.
Vaccination is an effective strategy
In China, for example, vaccination of domestic birds against H7N9 successfully limited its spread, indicating that vaccination may be an effective strategy if used in combination with other measures to limit transmission. In pigs and horses, management of influenza is dependent on vaccination with biosecurity.
Influenza Diagnosis
Diagnosis based on symptoms is fairly accurate in otherwise healthy people during seasonal epidemics and should be suspected in cases of pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, or if encephalitis, myocarditis, or breaking down of muscle tissue occur. Because influenza is similar to other viral respiratory tract illnesses, laboratory diagnosis is necessary for confirmation.
Sample testing
Common ways of collecting samples for testing include nasal and throat swabs. For severe cases, earlier diagnosis improves patient outcomes.
Diagnostic methods that can identify influenza include:
- Viral cultures,
- Antibody- and antigen-detecting tests, and
- Nucleic acid-based tests.
Antibody staining
Viruses can be grown in a culture of mammalian cells or embryonated eggs for 3–10 days to monitor the cytopathic effect. Final confirmation can then be done via antibody staining, hemadsorption using red blood cells, or immunofluorescence microscopy.
Shell vial cultures
Shell vial cultures, which can identify infection via immunostaining before a cytopathic effect appears, are more sensitive than traditional cultures with results in 1–3 days.
Serological assays
Common serological assays include hemagglutination inhibition assays that detect HA-specific antibodies, virus neutralization assays that check whether antibodies have neutralized the virus, and enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assays. These methods tend to be relatively inexpensive and fast but are less reliable than nucleic-acid-based tests.
Immunofluorescent antibody tests
Direct fluorescent or immunofluorescent antibody (DFA/IFA) tests involve staining respiratory epithelial cells in samples with fluorescently-labeled influenza-specific antibodies, followed by examination under a fluorescent microscope. They can differentiate between IAV and IBV but can’t subtype IAV.
RIDTs
Rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDTs) are a simple way of obtaining assay results, are low cost, and produce results quickly, at less than 30 minutes, so they are commonly used, but they can’t distinguish between IAV and IBV or between IAV subtypes and are not as sensitive as nucleic-acid based tests.
NATs
Nucleic acid-based tests (NATs) amplify and detect a viral nucleic acid. Most of these tests take a few hours, but rapid molecular assays are as fast as RIDTs. Among NATs, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is the most traditional and considered the gold standard for diagnosing influenza because it is fast and can subtype IAV, but it is relatively expensive and more prone to false positives.
Amplification-based assays
Other NATs that have been used include loop-mediated isothermal amplification-based assays, simple amplification-based assays, and nucleic acid sequence-based amplification. Nucleic acid sequencing methods can identify infection by obtaining the nucleic acid sequence of viral samples to identify the virus and antiviral drug resistance.
The traditional method is Sanger sequencing, but it has been largely replaced by next-generation methods that have greater sequencing speed and throughput.
Influenza Treatment
Mild or moderate illness
Treatment of influenza in cases of mild or moderate illness is supportive and includes anti-fever medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, adequate fluid intake to avoid dehydration, and resting at home.
Sore throat
Cough drops and throat sprays may be beneficial for sore throat. It is recommended to avoid alcohol and tobacco use while sick with the flu. Aspirin is not recommended to treat influenza in children due to an elevated risk of developing Reye syndrome.
Septic shock
Corticosteroids likewise are not recommended except when treating septic shock or an underlying medical condition, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma exacerbation, since they are associated with increased mortality.
If a secondary bacterial infection occurs, then treatment with antibiotics may be necessary.

Used for severely ill patients
Antiviral drugs are primarily used to treat severely ill patients, especially those with compromised immune systems. Antivirals are most effective when started in the first 48 hours after symptoms appear.
Later administration may still be beneficial for those who have underlying immune defects, those with more severe symptoms, or those who have a higher risk of developing complications if these individuals are still shedding the virus.
Antiviral treatment
Antiviral treatment is also recommended if a person is hospitalized with suspected influenza. Most antiviral drugs against influenza fall into two categories:
- Neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors, and
- M2 inhibitors.
NA inhibitors
This targets the enzymatic activity of NA receptors, mimicking the binding of sialic acid in the active site of NA on IAV and IBV virions so that viral release from infected cells and the rate of viral replication are impaired. NA inhibitors include oseltamivir, which is consumed orally in a prodrug form and converted to its active form in the liver, and zanamivir, which is a powder that is inhaled nasally.
M2 inhibitors
The adamantanes amantadine and rimantadine are orally administered drugs that block the influenza virus’s M2 ion channel, preventing viral uncoating. These drugs are only functional against IAVs but are no longer recommended for use because of widespread resistance to them among IAVs.
Ayurvedic remedies for Influenza
The Clove Bud, nature’s cough drop
If you have a persistent cough, you most likely will do anything to pacify it so you can go about your daily tasks. In fact, a cough is often the final stage of an illness as it can be caused by the irritation that is created while the throat is healing. You may feel better, yet your cough continues on and on.
Directions
Take 3 whole clove buds and pop them into your mouth during a coughing spasm, scratchy throat, or anytime needed. Suck on them until they begin to fall apart and no longer have any flavor. Repeat as often as needed. 2. Turmeric, salt, and cayenne gargle for sore throat and swollen glands.
This remedy contains all of the necessary properties of being anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and expectorant (removes phlegm). Allowing the gargle to penetrate the glands and throat for localized treatment is very powerful as well, and works best if the soreness is more superficial rather than deep down in the throat.
Directions for use
Mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and a small pinch of cayenne pepper in 1 cup of warm water. Stir thoroughly. Use this as a gargle by tilting your head back fully and gargle for 10 to 20 seconds (or longer) then spit it out.
Repeat this 3 times in a row and perform every 6 hours or as much needed for prevention or treatment of a sore throat or swollen glands.
Ginger juice for Nausea
Although ginger is great for fighting infection, this remedy is specific for nausea and dull appetite that often accompanies illness. If you are lucky enough to have a juicer, this is the most powerful way to extract the juice.
However, if you do not have one, you can still utilize this remedy by creating a powerful and potent decoction. Either way, this remedy is sure to penetrate through the dull heaviness that accumulates in the stomach, increase the digestive force, and clear out any toxins in the gut.
As an added benefit, ginger is also great for fever, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and a powerful expectorant just to name a few.
Directions
Juicing method: Wash off 1/2 pound of ginger and chop it into pieces to fit through the juicer. Juice and store in an airtight glass jar. One-half pound of ginger should make about 1/2 cup of juice). Mix 1 teaspoon of this juice in 1/2 cup of warm water. Drink this every 2 to 3 hours during illness or as much as needed.
Decoction method: Wash 1/2 pound of ginger and finely mince or grate it into 4 cups of boiling water. Reduce the heat to simmer and cover, leaving a slight crack in the lid. Steep here for several hours until the liquid is boiled down (slowly) to 1 cup. Strain and store in an airtight jar. Take 1 tablespoon mixed in 1/2 cup of warm water. Drink this every 2 to 3 hours during illness or as much as needed.
Tulsi, Turmeric, and Ginger tea for Fever, Cold, or Influenza
Whether bacterial or viral by nature, this infusion is quite effective for preventing an illness or treating an already manifested sickness.
A few of its mighty health benefits include immune boosting, digestion-enhancing, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, expectorant, and febrifuge.
Directions
Drink this tea at the first sign of sickness, 1 to 3 times daily. Once sick, drink a warm cup of this tea every 2 to 4 hours or as much as needed. Use the honey sparingly as viruses and bacteria thrive on sugar. So, a small amount of honey is beneficial for colds, etc – but too much will be harmful.
Ginger-Baking Soda bath for Influenza
There is no better way to treat a sickness than to sweat out the toxins by taking a hot soak. This ginger blend will help to increase the sweating process further and is also highly beneficial for pacifying a fever. It relaxes the muscles and the mind and is great for any aches that often accompany influenza.
It is equally beneficial for coughing as it relaxes the respiratory tract, which is often constricted and stressed during times of coughing spasms. Adding some essential oils such as tulsi, sweet orange, eucalyptus, peppermint, and clove can help promote healing even further.
Directions
Fill the tub with moderately hot water. While filling, add 1/3 cup of ginger powder and 1/3 cup of baking soda; mix until fully dissolved. Relax in this ginger bath for at least 15 minutes or until you break a sweat. If there are respiratory issues, add eucalyptus, peppermint, sweet orange, and clove essential oils (optional). If there is fever and influenza, add tulsi, sweet orange, rosemary, and clove essential oils (optional).
Mahasudarshana Churna
If you are sick of resorting to antibiotics but need powerful relief, this traditional Ayurvedic formula may be the answer. In fact, it not only fights bacterial infections but also alleviates viral, fungal, parasitical, and any other microbial infection. Drink water and fluids
Drinking water and other fluids are even more important when you have influenza. This is true whether you have respiratory or stomach influenza.
Water helps to keep your nose, mouth, and throat moist. This helps your body get rid of built-up mucous and phlegm. You can also get dehydrated if you aren’t eating or drinking normally. Diarrhea and fever (two common symptoms of influenza), can also cause water loss.

Get plenty of rest
It’s important to rest and get more sleep when you have influenza. Sleeping can help boost your immune system. This helps your body fight off the influenza virus. Cancel your usual routine and make sleep a priority to help get you back on your feet.
Drink warm broth
Drinking warm chicken is a good way to help you stay hydrated. It helps to loosen and break up nose and sinus congestion.
Bone broth is also naturally high in protein and minerals like sodium and potassium. Drinking broth is a good way to replenish these nutrients while you have influenza. Plus, protein is important for rebuilding immune cells.
Up your zinc intake
The mineral zinc is important for your immune system. This nutrient helps your body make germ-fighting white blood cells. Research shows that zinc might help ease cold and influenza symptoms. Zinc helps your body fight the influenza virus and may slow down how fast it multiplies.
You can take a zinc supplement or a multivitamin with zinc during flu season. You can normally get plenty of zinc from a balanced daily diet. Foods that are high in zinc include:

- Pull the saltwater to the back of your throat and gargle it for about 10 to 30 seconds so that it rinses your mouth and throat, and
- Spit the water into a sink and repeat 2 to 4 times.
Do not swallow the saltwater. Do not allow children to gargle until they can safely gargle with plain water.
Drink herbal tea
Several herbs have natural antiviral and antibacterial properties. Its antiviral properties are effective against some kinds of influenza viruses. Other herbs and green leafy teas also have germ-fighting and antioxidant benefits.
You can make an influenza-fighting herbal tea with star anise and other herbs like:
- Green or black tea,
- Turmeric,
- Fresh or dried ginger, or ginger paste,
- Fresh garlic, and
- Cloves.
Sweeten herbal teas with pure honey. Honey, royal jelly, and other bee products have been found to have natural antiviral and antibacterial properties.
Essential oils
