Vaginal yeast infection (also known as candidal vulvovaginitis and vaginal thrush) is the excessive growth of yeast in the vagina that results in irritation. The most common symptom is vaginal itching, which may be severe. Other symptoms include burning with urination, a thick, white vaginal discharge that typically does not smell bad, pain during sex, and redness around the vagina. Symptoms often worsen just before a woman’s period. Around 75% of women have at least one vaginal yeast infection at some point in their lives, while nearly half have at least two. Let us find out symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment, and Siddha remedies of Swami Hardas Life System.
Vaginal yeast infection Meaning
Vaginal yeast infection is an infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida. Candida normally lives inside the body (in places such as the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina) and on the skin without causing any problems. Sometimes Candida can multiply and cause an infection if the environment inside the vagina changes in a way that encourages its growth.
Vaginal yeast infection Symptoms
The symptoms of vaginal thrush include:
- Vulval itching,
- Vulval soreness and irritation,
- Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse (superficial dyspareunia),
- Pain or discomfort during urination (dysuria), and
- Vaginal discharge, which is usually odorless.
In one study, women with vaginal yeast infection were no more likely to describe their discharge as cottage cheese-like than women without.
As well as the above symptoms of thrush, vulvovaginal inflammation can also be present. The signs of vulvovaginal inflammation include:
- Erythema (redness) of the vagina and vulva,
- Vaginal fissuring (cracked skin),
- Edema (swelling from a build-up of fluid), and
- Satellite lesions (sores in the surrounding area). This is rare but may indicate the presence of another fungal condition, or the herpes simplex virus (the virus that causes genital herpes).
Vaginal candidiasis can very rarely cause congenital candidiasis in newborns.
Vaginal yeast infection Causes
Medications
Infection occurs in about 30% of women who are taking a course of antibiotics by mouth. Broad-spectrum antibiotics kill healthy bacteria in the vagina, such as Lactobacillus. These bacteria normally help to limit yeast colonization.
Oral contraceptive use is also associated with an increased risk of vaginal thrush.
Pregnancy
In pregnancy, higher levels of estrogen make a woman more likely to develop a yeast infection. During pregnancy, the Candida fungus is more common, and recurrent infection is also more likely. There is tentative evidence that treatment of asymptomatic candidal vulvovaginitis in pregnancy reduces the risk of preterm birth.
Lifestyle
While infections may occur without sex, a high frequency of intercourse increases the risk. Personal hygiene methods or tight-fitting clothing, such as tights and thong underwear, do not appear to increase the risk.
Diseases
Those with poorly controlled diabetes have increased rates of infection while those with well-controlled diabetes do not. The risk of developing thrush is also increased when there is a poor immune function, HIV/AIDS, or those receiving chemotherapy.
Diet
A diet high in sugar may increase the risk of vaginal thrush; in some women, reducing sugar intake seems to reduce the risk of reoccurring vaginal thrush.
Vaginal yeast infection Species are responsible
While Candida albicans are the most common yeast species associated with vaginal thrush, other yeast types can produce similar symptoms.
A Hungarian study of 370 patients with confirmed vaginal yeast infections identified the following types of infection:
- Candida albicans: 85.7%
- Non-albicans Candida (8 species): 13.2%
- Saccharomyces cerevisiae: 0.8%
- Candida albicans and Candida glabrata: 0.3%
Non-albicans Candida are often found in complicated cases of vaginal thrush in which the first line of treatment is ineffective. These cases are more likely in those who are immunocompromised.
Vaginal yeast infection Diagnosis
Vulvovaginal candidosis is the presence of Candida in addition to vaginal inflammation. The presence of yeast is typically diagnosed in one of three ways:
- Vaginal wet mount microscopy,
- Microbial culture, and
- Antigen tests.
Uncomplicated
Uncomplicated thrush is when there are less than four episodes in a year, the symptoms are mild or moderate, it is likely caused by Candida albicans, and there are no significant host factors such as poor immune function.
Complicated
A complicated thrush is when there are more than four episodes in a year, and gets complicated if coupled with:
- Pregnancy,
- Poorly controlled diabetes,
- Poor immune function, or
- Thrush is not caused by Candida albicans.
Recurrent
About 5-8% of the reproductive age female population will have four or more episodes of symptomatic Candida infection per year. Because vaginal and gut colonization with Candida is commonly seen in people with no recurrent symptoms, recurrent symptomatic infections are not simply due to the presence of Candida organisms.
Vaginal yeast infection Treatment
Intravaginal (vaginal suppository)
- Butoconazole,
- Clotrimazole,
- Miconazole,
- Nystatin,
- Tioconazole,
- Terconazole.
All are more or less equally effective.
By mouth
Fluconazole as a single dose. For severe disease, another dose after 3 days may be used.
Short-course topical formulations (i.e., single dose and regimens of 1–3 days) effectively treat uncomplicated candidal vulvovaginitis. The topically applied azole drugs are more effective than nystatin. Treatment with azoles results in relief of symptoms and negative cultures in 80–90% of patients who complete therapy.
Antifungal medication
Treatment for vagina thrush using antifungal medication is ineffective in up to 20% of cases. There are several reasons for treatment failure. For example, if the infection is different, such as bacterial vaginosis (the most common cause of abnormal vaginal discharge), rather than thrush.
Recurrent
For infrequent recurrences, the simplest and most cost-effective management is self-diagnosis and early initiation of topical therapy. However, women whose condition has previously been diagnosed with candidal vulvovaginitis are not necessarily more likely to be able to diagnose themselves; therefore, any woman whose symptoms persist after using an over the counter preparation, or who has a recurrence of symptoms within 2 months, should be evaluated with office-based testing.
Alternative Vaginal yeast infection Treatments
Up to 40% of women seek alternatives to treat vaginal yeast infections. Example products are herbal preparations, probiotics, and vaginal acidifying agents. Other alternative treatment approaches include:
- Switching contraceptives,
- Treatment of the sexual partner, and
- Gentian violet.
Probiotics
Probiotics (either as pills or as yogurt) do not appear to decrease the rate of occurrence of vaginal yeast infections. No benefit has been found for active infections. Example probiotics purported to treat and prevent candida infections are:
- Lactobacillus fermentum RC-14,
- Lactobacillus fermentum B-54,
- GR-1 Lactobacillus rhamnosus,
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, and
- Lactobacillus acidophilus.
There is no evidence to support the use of special cleansing diets and colonic HYDROTHERAPY for prevention.
Home remedies for Vaginal yeast infection
Yoghurt
Being a natural probiotic, the good bacteria in yoghurt build immunity, maintain optimum PH balance, and prevent bacteria or yeast growth in the vaginal area. It is also extremely effective in restoring the body’s flora to a natural state.
Apply homemade yoghurt directly onto the affected areas or dip a tampon in it and wear it for 20-30 minutes and then wash off with cool water. Do this twice a day to see quick results.
Tea tree oil and Honey
Imbued with potent anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, the oil obtained from Tea tree leaves hold high significance in soothing dry, chaffed, and inflamed skin. Honey on the other hand moistures the inflamed skin. But one must keep in mind to dilute the tea tree oil in warm water before applying it to the area as it may cause a little irritation.
Instill 2-3 drops of tea tree oil in lukewarm water, add a spoonful of honey to it and dab it over the infected part using a cotton ball to get effective results.
Aloe Vera Gel
Fresh aloe vera gel scraped out of the aloe barbadensis leaves has incredible soothing and moisturizing properties that provide immediate relief from irritated, inflamed itchy skin. Thanks to its anti-microbial properties, it restricts the growth of infection-causing bacteria or fungi.
Apply a thin layer of the freshly extracted aloe gel onto the affected part to alleviate inflammation and provide a cool sensation.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Thanks to the bioactive ingredients, the tonic fights toxins and shields the vaginal area from fungus and bacteria that ultimately cause infection. It also restores balance in the vaginal flora.
You can either drink a spoonful of ACV with a glass of lukewarm water or add half a cup of apple cider vinegar into a bucket of lukewarm water and wash the vaginal area regularly with it to treat the infection.
Virgin Coconut Oil
Owing to its multifaceted properties like anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral, this fatty oil obtained from fresh coconut flesh is pivotal in the case of vaginitis. Loaded with healthful nutrients, coconut oil not only thwarts the growth of fungus or bacteria in the vaginal area but also soothes dry, inflamed irritated skin.
Gently massage the affected area with a thin layer of coconut and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash off with cool water. Perform this ritual twice a day to get rid of the Candid fungus.
Diet for Vaginal yeast infections
High Kapha and low agni are likely causes of a chronic yeast infection. These need to be addressed by treating the dysfunctional digestive system and changing the diet.
It is best to follow a diet that is Pitta-soothing, but not Kapha-provoking.
Preferred diet for Vaginal yeast infection
- Eating moderate quantities of food, especially those with Kapha pacifying qualities. All foods low in glycemic index are generally Kapha pacifying. These include leafy vegetables, whole grains, beans, and fruits like apple, papaya, guava, oranges, etc.
- Grains like quinoa, pearled barley, oats with bran, and whole wheat (in form of porridge) are good choices.
- White lean meats over red meats.
- Freshly cooked, warm food over raw and cold food to check Kapha aggravation.
- To soothe Pitta, it is advisable to consume food spiced with cooling herbs like mint, fennel, and coriander.
- Buttermilk (8 ounces) seasoned with rock salt and 1/4th tsp of powder of roasted cumin seeds.
- Oils like coconut oil, olive, ghee, and rice bran oil pacify Pitta, are good for you, and do not aggravate Kapha if taken in small quantities.
- Take coriander, fennel, and mint tea 2 times a day.
- To make this tea, boil ½ tsp of dried mint leaves and 1 tsp each of coarsely ground coriander and fennel seeds in 300 ml of water. Reduce to half and sieve. Drink it lukewarm.
- Bitters like bitter gourd, mint & fenugreek leaves and astringents like salad leaves (to be consumed ONLY at room temperature) and spinach.
Avoidable diet for Vaginal yeast infection
- Minimize or avoid Kapha aggravating foods with a high glycemic index like sugar and sugary foods, sweet fruits, root vegetables, white bread, white rice, pasta, etc. These foods increase Kapha to unmanageable proportions, thereby causing imbalances and disorders.
- Avoid too much salt, tomatoes, and sugar in your diet.
- Avoid eating if you are not hungry.
- Subsequently, avoid consumption of incompatible foods like milk with fruits and vegetables, fish with milk, etc.
- Avoid or minimize alcohol, tea, and coffee as per the severity of your condition. (two cups of non-alcoholic beverages in a day is acceptable
